Day 100: The Reboot

Welcome to SchutzHappens 2.0!

Reboots seem to be in vogue these days.  In recent years we have seen reboots of Battlestar Galactia, Star Trek, James Bond, Planet of the Apes, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character, Superhero movies are constantly rebooted, and even Beethoven, the loveablely destructive St. Bernard has been given the reboot treatment.  Seriously.  Beethoven… Click Here.

What is a reboot you ask?  Well, if you live in a cave and the above examples were not enough and you are confused by the image in your head of Dr. Zaius restarting his computer, let me tell you.  A ‘reboot’ is also defined as “something, especially a series of films or television programs, which has been restarted or revived.”

Some of you reading this post may be fully aware, but for those of you finding us for the first time, this is a reboot of my previous blog called, no surprise here, SchutzHappens.  I started that blog on my first day with the U.S. Department of State and, keeping a day count, I chronicled my misadventures in the Foreign Service, living in Serbia, Pakistan, Suriname, and Eritrea… as well as any other random thought I had in my head.

And about two and a half years ago I walked away from it for personal reasons… which I discussed in my final post there.  Feel free to visit the original SchutzHappens anytime.  I intend to keep it live because it was a very big part of my life for well over four years.  And deleting it just does not seem right.  And continuing it does not seem right either.

You see… a lot has happened in the last two and a half years.  And even though I am still with the Foreign Service, I experienced a life changing event that warranted restarting the day count.

I got remarried!  To the most amazing woman… who is beyond perfect for me (as you will soon find out in the coming posts).  And our story deserves a new blog; with a new beginning.  And to be completely honest, I wasn’t really sure that I was ready to start blogging again.  Heather is the one who has encouraged this endeavor.  And she is even one who named this new project: SchutzHappens 2.0.  And as we count the days, you won’t just be hearing from me… you’ll be hearing from both of us.  Because this is not my blog.  SchutzHappens 2.0 is OUR blog.

And yes, we are getting a bit of a late start.  We are just starting and already on Day 100… but our story is timeless.

So, who is this amazing woman named Heather?  Let me tell you… it all started on May 1, 2013… when I received an instant message from a former boss, from a job I had left five years before this fateful day…
